BACK TO WORK

After several weeks of inertia in the studio I've finally found my way back to the easel. I'm still fascinated by this series of landscapes of skies of my own design (I like that title), also known as my paper towel paintings because of the technique of blotting with paper towels.

So far there are 10 in the series, with at least one or two more planned. In each one the palette is limited to 3 hues plus Titanium white.

The painting is finished, and I'm rather pleased with the results. It is not unlike a lot of my previous work...big sky, low foreground...but seems to have a different "look" to it. I plan to use the same approach in one or two more paintings to see how it can evolve.

I don't know if the photos show it very well, but I used the same basic colors in the foreground as in the sky, with the edition of some touches of green.

IMPROVISED SKY

My initial intention was to create a warm gray sky with subtle variations in value to dominate the canvas. Separating the sky from a foreground of similar value would be a fee dramatic elements on the horizon. Didn't someone say something about "the best laid plans..."? It was not working, or, I could not make it work, so in frustration I did what I usually do...put all the chosen colors on the canvas and began randomly blending them with a dampened paper towel until I achieved my sky, not the one I originally planed, but this one, which I think is better.

Now all I have to do is figure out what to do with the rest of the canvas.
