RESTORING AMERICA...ARCHITECTURALLY

There was a period when almost all of my art was devoted to architectural subjects.  This painting, from the late 1980s was intended to pay homage to restored American architecture, and is titled Restored America.

The daily dose of art HEADING TO CHICAGO LAND

I'm sitting in a comfortable coach seat on the train to Chicago to spend a few day with my daughter and her family in Oak Park..  So it only makes sense that today's fare is from the village of O P.

The daily dose of art TOWN AND CITYSCAPES

Staying with the long and narrow for at least another day, looking at cities and towns.  Creating these paintings starts with a day long task of photographing everything and anything in the selected village, because at the outset I usually don't know how the piece will be composed.  Since most of these were done before the digital age, I would end up with dozens of photos spread out before me on one of the large drawing tables.  Then the fun would begin, looking, arranging, and rearranging until I finally came up with the composition that came closest to depicting the subject with some semblance of geographic accuracy.

 

 Baltimore's Inner Harbor, above, and Newport RI, below were two of the more challenging compositions to create.  The Inner Harbor had to be "straightened", and Newport had to be seen from the water, but all my photos were on land.  Both paintings called for some artistic liberty.

 

This view of St. Michael's, on Maryland's Eastern Shore is from photos taken from a dear friend's boat.  More than anything else I remember the delicious Red Snapper Soup Betty served us.

The daily dose of art STREETSCAPES

From the very beginning I have been working with an exaggerated horizontal format to create a series of streetscapes as shown below, and townscapes that I'll save for another day.

ON THE EASEL

The once grand and elegant Irving Cobb Hotel (now apartments) on Paducah's Broadway, is now sitting on my easel.

Rendered primarily in watercolor, with s bit of ink and acrylic, it measures 30x22".

PAINTING POPPIES

is something I've done...not just once or twice, but three times. Sadly I can only document two, so you will have to take my word for the third one. I could not resist their delicate, transparent petals and their quiet luminescent colors.





I've probably done about 6-7 floral paintings, all in watercolor, and I enjoyed doing everyone. I don't know why I've not done more.
